Cambodia - With tens of thousands of Orphans roaming the streets, poverty stricken areas like you have never seen, and remote places many have never ventured to, Cambodia makes an impact like no other. In the late 70’s the Khmer Rouge rounded up all of the educated, political, and otherwise innocent people and began murdering them. The plan was to bring the country back to a starting place by eliminating those who would oppose the regime. Pol Pot, the leader of the Khmer Rouge, became responsible for the murder of more than two million of his own people in a very short time, including many women and children.
Today skulls left over from beheadings are piled up in various places, sometimes in excess of one hundred feet tall. The current issues in Cambodia are a direct result of the blow the Khmer Rouge hit the country with and include Aids, Malaria, Typhoid, and other diseases as the top killers. Because of the difficulty in reaching many areas of Cambodia and the lack of educational resources, many Cambodians are suffering with little to no assistance. The Eastern Sky Project works with the Orphans and remote tribes of Cambodia, seeing them as the most neglected and the future of the Country.
